Shipwreck of the Murmansk, north coast of Norway


Murmansk Russian Sverdlov class cruiser built 1955 one of the last all gun cruisers decommitioned 1987 scrapped 1995 Lost 1994 while in tow to India for scrap along the berents coast between North cape and Tromso is now aground on Soeroey Finmark.

  1. This wreckage is actually a bit controversial in Norway. The local inhabitants in the area are (understandably) worried about toxic substances leaking from the wreckage and damaging fisheries and the local environment.

    Some investigations and measurements have been done, but not very extensive, and the feeling is that if this wreckage had been further south, close to more densely populated areas, there is no way it would be left in place for such a long time as it already has.
