In this second part, we explore the inside of the buildings of Prypiat . As in most ghost town, the oddity comes form the perception that people were still living there recently, and left suddenly, and they in fact left suddenly - they were given 72 hours to leave - but this happened 22 years ago.

Prypiat (Ukrainian: При́п'ять, Pryp”jat’; Russian: При́пять, Pripjat’; or Pripyat) is an abandoned city in the Zone of alienation in northern Ukraine, Kiev Oblast, near the border with Belarus. It was home to the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant workers. The city was abandoned in 1986 following the Chernobyl disaster. Its population had been around 50,000 prior to the accident... see more of the city in Chernobyl disaster part 1

On the north coast of Tunisia, not far from the cities of Bizerte (Banzart) and Menzel Djemil, you can see this rusted giant. What happened to her ? on January 21st 1983 the Ydra, a greek ship went aground after a fire in engine room. Probably too damaged to be repaired she never left Tunisia.

(a picture of the Ydra few years after the wreck)

The Ydra was built in 1966 in the UK under the name Manchester Fort, she became a Yugoslavia ship under the name Biokovo in 1971, before becoming a Greek ship in 1980.

Its population had been around 50,000 prior to the accident.

The Chernobyl disaster was a nuclear reactor accident in the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the Soviet Union (now Northern Ukraine). It was the worst nuclear power plant accident in history and the only instance of level 7 on the International Nuclear Event Scale, resulting in a severe release of radioactivity into the environment following a massive power excursion which destroyed the reactor.

The deserted city is just 18 km away from the power plant. Prypiat is probably the most famous nuclear ghost town. The overall cost of the disaster is estimated at $200 billion USD. This places the Chernobyl disaster as the costliest disaster in modern history. Check a previous article on the vehicles that were used during the disaster and now abandoned in a vehicle cemetery few km away from Prypiat.

Tens of ships were also abandoned due to radioactive contamination.

Abandoned in 1986 those cranes never moved since.

This collection of rusted anchors, also called the cemetery of anchors is located on the island of Tavira, near Barril beach in the region of Algarve, Portugal. As you can see from their perfect alignment, they were not abandoned, but rather put in this place on purpose.

A story exists to explain their presence. It's the story of an active tuna fishing activity who sustained hundred of families for centuries, along with all the plants that go wit such activity.

At a certain point the resource was over fished, and couldn't sustain the fishing activity anymore. The tuna fishermen and the fishing industry is long gone now, it's been replaced by hotels and tourists. This strange cemetery is now a reminder of the past, when tunas were a living resource.
